Before Watching
The team investigating the Zoque ruins includes a variety of skilled
professionals who interpret artifacts and make conjectures about the people who
left them. Team members, however, do not always agree. As students watch, have
them take notes on the artifacts collected and interpretations made about
each. Students should note the following: the artifact found; which expert made
conclusions about the artifact; and the expert's opinion(s). Have students pay
attention to each expert's area of specialization and how this may affect an
interpretation.
After Watching
Have students review their notes on the interpretations of Zoque artifacts.
When experts' opinions differed, which interpretations did students agree with
and why? What other evidence might add greater certainty to the
interpretations? What other interpretations might be drawn from the same
evidence?
