Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees
Introduction

One of the world’s best known animal researchers surveys the results of more than three decades of painstaking study in JANE GOODALL’S WILD CHIMPANZEES.

When legendary scientist Jane Goodall first came to Tanzania more than 35 years ago to study the chimpanzees of Gombe National Park, the vast, flourishing forest teemed with apes. Today, the park is ravaged by logging, and home to only about 40 chimps, who live confined to a few protected square miles.

But the chimp population in Gombe remains abuzz with drama and intrigue. Of the many chimps Ms. Goodall got to know when she began her studies in 1960, just one — Fifi — is alive today. And Fifi’s two eldest sons, Freud and Frodo, are now locked in a power struggle over the title of top-ranking male, a conflict that is dominating life in the community.

If Jane could move the apes to Spain
They would be protected legislatively,
And the government of that country,
To their well-being would see.

We have read in the LATimes
That the future of apes is closely tied
To improvement of living conditions for humans–
Who also near the Gombe abide.

It is good to know, in these troublous times,
That there’s still some who cares for apes–
Creatures of near-human qualities,
Capable even of social and personal jackanapes.

These latter capabilites are also exhibited
By humans who to the U.S. presidency aspire–
And from time to time, while campaigning,
Say things for which they’re called “Liar!”.

And frequently don’t make much sense
Or at times sound exceedingly strange–
To other humans; and to chimps in the Gombe
(Should they be within hearing range).

All in all, by and large, overall,
It’s good that Jane is bringing hope and cheer
To Fifi and her sons Freud and Frodo,
As our national E-Day draws near.

but thats okay i’m doing a project on you! for science. :(

One should avoid excessive reliance
On what passes (in some quarters) for science,
And treasure Freud and Frodo
Quite alive (unlike the unfortunate Dodo)–
And with all Fifi’s motherly demands in compliance.
